Visions of Self is an annual show of work from female artists across the world. It’s hosted by the Women’s Voices, Women’s Vision group of Yosemite Sierra Artists. In our second year, we’re featuring over 100 artists from 14 countries, with work including the subjects of self-portraiture, environment, emotions, and state of being.
Selfie
Selfie – deals with the recasting of ourselves as an Icon. The Golden Calf, a false god, an Idol. shown in the background depicts how fleeting an idol can be. And how lost a people can be. The people are shown swooning and praying to themselves. They move through snapping selfies without necessarily taking the time to look at the Golden Calf. They are the subject of the photo. Their hands are holding the cell phone in prayer. Using their cell photos to depict them as different, unique, special, but in reality there is no difference and they are transient moving people in an atmosphere of idol like selfishness.
They have become their own idol. The cell phone they are holding, an everyday object has been recast as their new Icon.
